Matt Longhurst on Sittingbourne Fightback

Gaffer Talks - Sittingbourne Draw

Certainly not a game for the purist on Saturday but a valuable point away from home in a place we haven’t taken anything in three years of trying so that was a positive. The fact we came back from two nil down with ten minuets left shows we have the character required as a group over the course of season, and we seem to have instilled this in the players from pre-season.

Myself and Grant said from the outset we need to be fitter than last season, work harder and be harder to beat especially in games like Sittingbourne away. The players have grasped that so far, and we haven’t fielded our strongest eleven yet and haven’t even managed to pick the same team twice with injuries already. Even yesterday, Reece came off with a split eye after sixteen minutes so we had to re shuffle the pack, and we have Brad Peters injured, Jason Davis away, Adrian Todd injured after 35 minutes of his debut and Orlando has missed the last two games Ill. It was also Drew's first game of the season yesterday after injury so it’s been a little frustrating.

We should, by the next league game be at full strength against VCD which will be very pleasing.  Myself and Grant have been delighted with the players attitude and application so far and that’s a big plus. We have drawn the last three games only losing one league game to Hayward’s heath by the odd goal, giving us a better start to the season than in previous years and I believe the performances will get better as the season progresses. It’s just important to build into the season with points and stay unbeaten and i'm confident the wins will come along if we carry on and also get some players back fit. At the moment for a young group although a win and 3 losses would amount to the same points, only losing one of the opening four games is far more beneficial in terms of the long term and the building process which we are happy with.

I would like to thank the supporters for travelling to Kent on Saturday it is very much appreciated and we hope to see more of you down the road on Tuesday night as we visit Three Bridges in the new format of the Velocity Cup..

Tuesday will give us the chance to get some game time for some of the players that haven’t played much as well as possibly look at another system we have looked at over pre-season, it’s a local derby that always has goals and entertainment value I see it being no different Tuesday. The pitch is good there which will suit us and it makes for a good game with them having a great result at the weekend.

I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday .
