Matt Longhurst on the Opening Week

Matt on the season's opening week

Two games in, and one point taken but lots of positives to take from both games.

I felt Saturday against Hayward’s Heath we should have extended our lead during the first half when chances came our way and it was disappointing to lose to such a poor scrappy goal in the end and possibly we should of taken a point in the end after missing a great chance with the last kick of the game. We have had Drew and Dan Mosby missing so far, who are two of our most experienced players and perhaps this showed in the opening of the second half where we gave away an early goal even though we spoke about it at half time, it was disappointing to lose but I was still pleased with the effort and application of the players.

Tuesday night couldn’t of started any worse, being two nil down so early, but the character the lads showed again and gives us great optimism for the future with us coming back and finishing the stronger team in the first half. In the second half again we showed lots of battling qualities without being brilliant with the ball which is something I think will come as the team settles and gets more continuity. The biggest factor for me and Grant is that the players are showing a togetherness and character and that’s massive for a long season. The fluidity and performances will get better and as long as we keep the group together I’m confident we will continue to progress as the season goes on.

We are aiming at bringing a centre forward in once we get the right option available to us, but it’s tough at this stage of the season as we are a little bit down the pecking order in terms of the football food chain, but I do believe once we get that vital ingredient plus Robin fit and Kyle gets an understanding of the level, we have plenty to work with.

I’ve been delighted with the form of Oshaye and Freddie two returning players this season and Karn has started the season really well. As always it’s important we remember we are a young group, but to our supporters I can honestly say this group of players are working hard for you, the club and each other and are a pleasure to work with.

The vocal support Tuesday was brilliant and makes a real difference the same again Saturday and Monday would be great as it really helps the players.

I look forward to seeing you all Saturday when we start our FA cup trail.

Enjoy the games
